Giving Back: Taking Agile from the Boardroom to the Lecture Theatre

At Olive Jar Digital, we spend our days immersed in the mechanics of digital transformation. We build teams, optimise processes, and deliver complex, user-centred services for both the public and private sectors. But recently, I had the privilege of stepping away from the boardroom and into the lecture theatre at the Universidade do Algarve in Portugal.

I was invited by the Computer Science faculty to deliver a guest lecture to their students, focusing on a topic that sits at the very heart of what we do: "Key Methodologies: Rapid Development & Fail Fast, Learn Hard in Agile Sprints."

Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Reality

For university students, Agile methodologies can sometimes feel like abstract concepts. My goal was to bridge academic theory to market reality. I wanted to show them what Agile looks like when the stakes are high, the deadlines are tight and the user needs are complex.

During the 45-minute session, we discussed the fundamental differences between Waterfall methods and the iterative power of Agile. To make the concept tangible, we used the analogy of painting the Mona Lisa. If Leonardo da Vinci had used Waterfall, he would have painted the canvas section by section, leaving the portait commissioner completely in the dark until the final reveal. By applying an Agile mindset, he would start with a rough sketch, progressively adding detail, colour, and refinement, thus allowing for first hand feedback and any required correction at every stage.

It is this ability to pivot, to "fail fast and learn hard," that makes Agile so vital in today's digital economy.

The Privilege of Inspiring the Next Generation

Standing in front of a room full of bright, ambitious Computer Science students was a deeply rewarding experience. These young people are the future digital professionals who will soon be building the software, services, and platforms of tomorrow.

Sharing the challenges we navigate at Olive Jar Digital and how we leverage Agile practices to overcome them, felt like a meaningful way to give back to the community. The students' engagement, their insightful questions and their eagerness to understand the practical application of their studies were truly inspiring.

Looking Forward

As an industry, we have a responsibility to nurture emerging talent. Whether it is through guest lectures, mentoring, or providing opportunities for junior developers and analysts to join our teams, investing in the next generation is an investment in the future of digital delivery.

I want to extend my sincere thanks to Guilherme Bacôco and the teaching staff at the Universidade do Algarve for the invitation, and for the wonderful hospitality at the Restaurante Universitário. It was an honour to share Olive Jar Digital's journey with the students, and I look forward to seeing the incredible things they will go on to achieve.
